· Need a book or magazine? Check out our library in the clubhouse. You can borrow the books and return them when through. If you have some books you would like to donate, it would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

Thanks so much to Becky Lacher for hosting the coffee and donuts. It requires early hours, preparing the coffee and setting up, ordering, and picking up the donuts. If you’d like to host a coffee social, contact Becky Lacher for information.

Marina

Keys are now available for the ramp at the marina. Keys can be had a $5.00 refundable fee as stated in our bylaws. Contact Sylvia McCulloch at 324-2998 to pick up your key. The ramp gate will be locked effective August 1st. Springs residents only.

Social Notes

We had a great turnout for the luau dinner, approximately 62 attended. All the dishes supplied by our neighbors were delicious, and what a great variety. We also celebrated Audrey Luning’s 82nd birthday and Gene Dent’s 75th. Linda Watson has agreed to be chairwoman for the social committee.

Thanks to our dedicated volunteers who assist in buying, preparing, cooking, decorating, bartending, and cleanup—all an integral part of the success of our social functions.

Plan on coming to our dinner scheduled for August. The calling committee will call to take reservations. Please DO NOT drop in that evening without a reservation as we purchase food according to the amount of reservations received. —Sylvia

Coffee Social Donations

Just a reminder...when you arrive, please limit yourself to one donut at first and come back for another later. We had such a great turnout last month that we ran out before everyone could get one. Also, the purpose of these socials is for neighbors to get to know one another so please—NO TAKEOUTS!! Come socialize and enjoy the beauty of our community early in the morning the last Saturday of each month.

Springs Community Cleanup

If you’re wondering, the Aquarium Canal is approximately 7-8 feet deep in the middle where the boils erupt. It was a lot of work but was also great exercise and A LOT of FUN! Thanks go to Gene Dent, Cal Taylor, Linda Pool, Linda Watson, Larry Volke, Mike Fields, Sylvia McCulloch, Paul and Celeste Keller, Owen and Susan Welch, Ray and Betty Bilodeau, Becky Lacher, Ken and Jackie Wyko and family, Jorge and Alex Rivas, the Velez family, Nancy Reinert (Debbie Velez’s sister), and Hank and Jan Shupe. If I’ve missed anyone please know that I truly appreciate your help. The community looks great because of caring neighbors like you! —Jerry Velez, Grounds Mgr.

Yard of the Month - Peg Marley
4th of July Celebration

Here in The Springs our 4th of July Celebrations seem to get better and better every year. Thanks to Bill and Becky Lacher and Mike Fields for providing music. Also, thanks go to the Stephens, Velez, and Harrison families, along with Mike Fields and Bob Steele for providing the extra fireworks—they were great!! Thanks also go to our Social Committee for snacks, drinks, and a beautifully decorated clubhouse! We sure had a great time didn’t we?

If you didn’t get a chance to send a note of thanks to our military troops and would still like to, contact Debbie Velez and she’ll be glad to email your message of support to our military men and women via the website americasupportsyou.mil.

Attention!!

We have many new neighbors in our community who may not know the dangers involved in living here by the lake. We have several alligators who travel along the water’s edge very close in by the clubhouse and adjoining beaches. Please be advised that they are a real danger to your pets as well as your children. Also, several residents have had water moccasins in their yards even close to the front entrance.

Mike Jones, one of our neighbors, also advises that he was approached recently by a large and aggressive alligator while canoeing in the gully behind the homes on the west side of Palm Drive. We urge residents with back yards abutting the gully to be extremely cautious with children and pets.

In Memory

Sadly we have heard that our neighbor Ann Frey has passed on July 9th. Ed and Anna were married 64 years and have lived here in Florida for 28 years. They have 2 sons, Frank and Henry and 6 grandchildren. In Ed’s letter to friends and family, he expressed that in Ann’s memory he will be giving a gift to help build the Leesburg library and also expressed that if anyone would like to do the same in her honor, the address is:

Friends of the Leesburg Public Library
204 N. 5th St.
Leesburg, FL 34748

Farewell

Verna Clements of 17 East Bay Ave. is selling her home and moving to Texas to be closer to her family. She and her husband Benny Clements moved to The Springs in September 1971. They raised their 3 children here when it was still not as populated and from their home could see the lake. Benny passed away 2 years ago and since Verna has had many health problems she has decided to move closer to her daughter Linda. Verna was just honored with a lifetime award for volunteering as a pink lady for 32 years.

Verna has expressed that she will take wonderful memories of 35 years here in The Springs to Texas with all of her friends. Please keep in touch, her new address is:

Verna Clements
5501 Legacy Oaks Parkway Apt. 916
Schertz, Texas 78154

Enjoy your new life Verna, and God bless you.

  • Pool: A great bench for the pool area was donated by Debra Velez’s sister Nancy Reinert. Thanks so much. A bottlebrush tree donated by the Velez family in memory of one of our past board members, Charles Knight, was planted near the pool entrance. We are still experiencing people from outside our community using our pool. Board has advised that this is trespassing and the police will be called.

  • Budget/Finance: Cash balance of $94,900. All the income accounts should meet budget, except for excess water. All the expense accounts are running within the budget at this time.

  • Newsletter: In the future, all issues raised by the Board will be addressed as that in the newsletter.
  • Marina: The electric service is now operating for marina users. All boat users should be aware that the ramp will be locked effective August 1st. You can pick up your key for a $5.00 refundable fee and sign a hold-harmless agreement. The ramp will be locked after that date. Only members of the community may have a key. As the by-laws read, anyone misusing the ramp privileges by letting outsiders use their key will lose their privileges. Call 324-2998 for info. Thanks to all who helped clean up the marina area, it looks great.
  • Social: WOW!! What a fabulous fireworks display on July 4th. Thank you to the Velez family for coordinating the festivities along with everyone who donated their own fireworks and snacks, especially Bobby Steele.
The Luau was a big hit. Dinner was delicious, as always, thanks to Linda Watson and her wonderful helpers.
    Upcoming events:
July 17th—Kids Ice Cream Social, 2:00-3:00 PM.
August 20th—50’s dinner, cocktails at 5 PM, dinner at 6 PM.
  • Clubhouse: There’s been much discussion about changes needed at the clubhouse. The carpet is ruined. Perhaps the original terrazzo flooring can be restored. We will be getting estimates. The oven is gone and we will be replacing it hopefully before our next social dinner.
  • New business: The memorial garden proposal has been reopened again. Robert Gardner brought a granite stone about the size of a large brick for the board to inspect. A possible walkway or small area designated would utilize these bricks for a memorial to our deceased family and friends. If anyone is interested, there will be a signing sheet at the clubhouse to see if there is an interest. Cost of the brick engraved with sentiments would be $25.00.
